Located in the headquarters (get it? Head quarters?) we meet the bubbly Joy (Amy Pohler), the timid Fear (Bill Hader), the fiery-headed Anger (Lewis Black), the opinionated Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and the droopy, dreary Sadness (Phyllis Smith). Inside of Riley’s head, we have five main emotions who each, in their own way, are doing their jobs in keeping Riley happy and safe. As she begins to mature, things are not quite so simple anymore. As a little girl, her emotions are simple and easy to puzzle out. It is this move that triggers Riley’s mental and emotional transition.
In San Fran, it’s nothing but broccoli pizza and dead mice. In Minnesota, Riley is surrounded by love, friendship, and hockey. Storytellers do a remarkable job of showing us the bright, happy Minnesota juxtaposed against the grey and flatter San Fran. In the film, perky and optimistic 11-year old Riley is unceremoniously uprooted from her picture perfect existence in Minnesota and moved to cramped and dirty quarters in San Francisco because of her father’s start-up endeavor. Pixar veteran Pete Docter ( WALL-E Monsters, Inc.) spearheads this remarkable feature along with co-director Ronaldo del Carmen. After three long years of nothing but sequels, Pixar invites us to come in and “meet the little voices” inside of our heads…and this is one party for which you absolutely want to RSVP yes.
